Virus reported in the 2007 snapshot torrent
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:00:45 »

Avast! reports that there's a virus in two of the files from "modarchive_2007_official_snapshot_120000_modules.torrent".

"\modarchive_2007_official_snapshot_120000_modules\E\EL.zip > elementl.xm.zip > elementl.xm" is infected with Win95:CIH 1.x
"\modarchive_2007_official_snapshot_120000_modules\S\SH.zip > shloadertune.mod.zip > shloadertune.mod" is infected with DIR-II

I searched for the same files on the site, found shloadertune, and got the same virus warning when I tried to download it. I couldn't find elementl.xm though.

If it's a false positive, or you can't recreate the torrent, just let me know and I'll add them to my exceptions.

A torrent can't be recreated once it's spread around.
Also, even if it's not a false positive, how on earth would execute a module file? A virus needs to be executed.

I just meant someone could create a new torrent with those particular files removed or repaired.

Also, even if it's not a false positive, how on earth would execute a module file? A virus needs to be executed.

I've... got no idea. I'll just go ahead and add it to my exceptions then. Thanks for the help!

It depends on the stupidity of your AV and your AV's Heuristic scan level - the higher it is, the more useless info it gives to You - but it may be useful for sb else.

Those specific chiptunes probably were used in some viral tool.
For example, if you download yourself a trojan builder, even the included readme.txt file is improperly reported as virus. It is actually wiser to report it as a part of tool set, but AV companies are lazy..
Or, if a chiptune was used in a patcher or a keygen program..

There are some rare occasions, where a virus disguises it to be something else.
And there are also very special and rare Windows exploits... so...

A virus needs to be executed.

Partially true.

A torrent can't be recreated once it's spread around.

A torrent connection can be hijacked and malicious code can be injected. I've seen that a lot.

Btw, some files, I didn't care to write down their names, but some zips in modarchive's torrents are indeed broken. And there were about 4500+ duplicates and...

Somebody should make a new snapshot and erase all of the previous torrents. I'm tired of downloading all top tunes with score 10 to 7 one by effing one and from time to time read about that I'm a "Webspider" or a "Download Hammer".. wooo.. I'm above human! I have spider and hammer skills! And I don't even have fiber optics! 0.o >.<
What's the point of making such an easy download list, if your server is weak to handle even 2 pages of download. Why not add timers, code verification or smthn like that?
Hmm, one more thing, that torrent link on Download Hammer page is obsolete...

Nice attitude. Probably won't get you anywhere fast. The sense of entitlement these days *shrug*.

If we can make the download list harder for you to use, by all means provide some of you infinite wisdom since you seem to know how much load this site is handling. Before anyone suggests our capacity, I can assure you we are fine, the problem is one day we may not be - so, having to run the same system with the same traffic on a smaller system again will ultimately result in it having service issues.

The limiting system has been in place for a long time, and the relative number of complaints vs the time to implement something which would offer a shittier user experience for the vast majority of the users is really not an attractive prospect, for me, as the owner. Thanks all the same.

FYI its 1000 downloads a day, 250 pageloads an hour. Hardly anyone but automatic downloaders and robots ever trigger it, and looking at the stats here, you seem to be the exception to the rule. Sorry.

Oh, finally a useful remark that isn't soaked in attitude. Thanks. Noted.

Seriously, if you had posted something with a little more tact I might have put some more effort into giving a f*** about your situation.
