Impulse Tracker on Win XP/7
« on: January 24, 2012, 15:14:42 »

Hello, new member here and have a question. Is it possible to run IT on Win XP/7? I tried it with the DOSBox, but the sound is lagging, especially when there are many active channels.

Impulse Tracker in DOSBox is not really a good idea since resonant filters don't work in DOSBox. On a fairly modern system, it should run fast enough if you use the Gravis Ultrasound driver (since it uses hardware mixing). On a 32-Bit Windows XP environment, VDMSound would be an alternative to DOSBox, but on 64-Bit you're completely lost. You can try using SchismTracker, though, it's a fairly compatible rebuild of Impulse Tracker. Or of course you can try other compatible trackers such as OpenMPT.

I use Schism as an alternative now, but it's not just the same as IT. OpenMPT has Windows GUI which i don't like, so the only solution i see is to try using VDMSound. Thanks for reply.

What's wrong with Schism Tracker? I've now been using it as an alternative to IT and it has been working fine for me. It does everything Impulse Tracker did, and more to boot.
