Looking for a .mod song used in a fangame
« on: July 30, 2012, 21:20:48 »

Hello everybody, I joined the forums as I need some help regarding a song. I've played a rather old version of a fangame called Mario Forever. While the game did use some songs from official Mario games, some of these songs seem to be from some .MOD artists. For example, the song "One Fine Day..." is in this game and plays in the World 3 map overview:

I've downloaded some newer version of this fangame, and discovered that the way the .MOD files are now kept differently, allowing to play and identify the names of all of them...

...Except one. An earlier version of this fangame contains a song that has been removed entirely in newer versions, and I need some help identifying it. It plays in earlier versions whenever Bowser is fought, and for the life of me I can't find the name of it anywhere. Here's a gameplay video showing an earlier version with the song:

(Please skip to 6:59 for the song)

I would LOVE to find the song, but the credits don't mention the proper names for each of the songs (meaning the only way to find them is to play the original files with something like XMPlay), and earlier versions seem to have the .XM files stored in a way that I cannot access them.

Can anybody identify this song for me?

You could probably ask the creators of the game for the name of the tune, or at least how to access the music files in older versions. This song sounds very generic so I think the changes of anyone here identifying the module are pretty low.

Got good news, it turns out it IS possible to play the songs from earlier versions. They're in .DLL files, and I thought it wasn't possible, but I tried it...Works fantastically!

Excellent! For future reference, the song is called "Kaosession". Apologies for bothering you, and I appreciate the help.

Also, I wonder if it's possible to get the song out of it's current .DLL form, and post it up here to preserve. Could that be possible?

That may or may not be possible. It could be that the modules have been just renamed to .dll (a poor attempt at obfuscating the content), or that the modules are embedded as a resource in the DLL (easy to extract) or if they are somehow embedded as data (harder to extract). For that to know you'd have to show us that DLL, though. ;D

The news just gets better and better, doesn't it?

Shortly after posting my previous comment, I experimented with changing the .dll extensions by making a copy and changing the extension on the copy. It turns out you are indeed correct, all I have to do is change the extension, and they work like a charm in XMPlay, just as they did before!

I also discovered there are more songs that aren't archived here that are in the game:

The Holiday Anthem (World 2 Map)
Ykyrococ* (Plays somewhere in World 5, I think). The star is part of the title, but I had to leave it out since Windows doesn't like that.
There's another one simply titled "End", but there are already several songs with that title, so I'm not sure if that's already on here since I'm too lazy to check every single one of them.

EDIT: I have uploaded all three that I know aren't on this archive! These were all created simply by changing the extension, and seem to work fine in XMPlay. You can find author information the samples.
Enjoy (Well, once they're no longer pending)!
