Recent downtime / Server move
« on: January 21, 2016, 00:37:19 »

Last week, the ModArchive faced its second major hard disk failure in just two years; again both hard disks were affected. No data was lost, though, as the disks were still readable and we also create regular backups. However, the server itself needs to be replaced too. The site is now up again on the old server, but commenting and uploading has been disabled until the new server is all set up.
Stay tuned!

To be honest, I thought you were all working on a new site for TMA. Last week, I tried to go on it, but it just said, "500 - Internal Server Error". Now I see why it was down....but I'm curious. Do these kind of problems happen often, or just once in about a decade? And what do you mean by 'the server itself needs to be replaced too'? Does it mean that it'll disable access to TMA while maintenance is on?

These things are not supposed to happen at all, the RAID setup is supposed to handle such a situation gracefully - except of course when both hard drives die at the same time, which happened now for the second time already, despite the hard drives being of different age. I don't know all the details (m0d is in contact with the data center, not me), but I suppose that the server itself might be part of the problem, because usually hard drives should not die so easily.
TMA will probably face another small downtime when we will be migrating to the new server, indeed.

...aaaand we're fully back now. On a new server, with new hard disks. Let's hope this was the last outage for the next few years.
