You can view the trackers we currently know of here. I think the most popular around is MilkyTracker.

I'm just going to step in to defend ModPlug Tracker a bit, since that's the one I use.  Some people get a pretty impressive sound out of ModPlug Tracker.  (Granted, not me, because I don't have that kind of skill.)  So I don't think you should rule out ModPlug so hastily because you can't get a good sound out of it.  

But anyway, do have a look at the other trackers on the page Electrolyte linked, and find what it is you feel most comfortable with.

If you're songs sounds bad in ModPlug Tracker, it's more than likelly due to the two following:

Bad samples
Inexperience

If people could make wonderfull pieces of music using old tools like ProTracker and ScreamTracker III, you can be more than certain that ModPlug Tracker can give just as good sounds, if not better.

Of course, that does not mean that you have to stick with ModPlug Tracker. In fact, you do not even have to be tracking, there are lots of alternative ways of composing/generating music which are just as good or sometimes even better. I got plenty of software and ways I can recommend. Although, I still think tracking is one of the easiest way for someone, without prior experience in musical notation and such, to compose.

Indeed, it is just a question of time and of course of the auther who wants to compose in modplug. My first tracks sounded crappy for sure, but now, if i may say so myself, they have a nice sound, not only because i have a synthesizer from which i can record smaples but also because i look how others do well in modplug. or any other tracker. taht doesn't care.

I use ModPlug tracker.

If you're just starting out with a tracker, though, and samples are a problem, try using chip samples or a pre-tuned pack. (there's a sample pack at modulez.org for the compo going on now, link below) Especially if you have other musical experience, the tracker format is so different that you need to be able to play with patterns without having to mess with samples until you want to.
