Help identifying old DOS player
« on: September 29, 2020, 17:47:47 »

Long ago, I found an amazing mod player and have since been unsuccessful in rediscovering it. Here is what I recall of it:
* DOS-based
* PC-Speaker output compatible
* Refused to run with DOS High-Memory enabled
* Rich graphics: near-full-screen spectrum analyzer overlaid on a starfield simulation overlaid on per-channel vertical VU meters
* Rich graphical user interface (navigated by keyboard)
* Coded in Assembly Language, per the claim of the author

What was amazing about this software was that it could run 64+ channel MODs on a 25Mhz 486SX processor on a PC-speaker while also running all of those graphical effects.

I'm flummoxed how this software isn't easy to rediscover, given its polish and capability - comprehensive searches on the web have turned up other famous DOS players, but after having tried each in turn, none of them are what I remember.

I appreciate your suggestions, links, or uploads!

Maybe something will look familiar?

Or maybe it's one of those? https://modland.ziphoid.com/pub/software/players/DOS/

Some of the details don't quite match but maybe you're remembering Cubic Player?

@Saga Musix: that's a great repository of players! Thanks for the link. I'm having fun running random selections through DOSBox. Some really cool gems in there. Nothing jumps out at me yet, but I'll be running through them.

Ok I've gone through all of the DOS players in that link. There are some really impressive players in there! "Grind" was amusing with its dancing people effect. Others had really polished interfaces. Others were just crap.

But, none of them is the player I'm looking for. My request is seeming more vague now, though, seeing how many players were kinda close to what I remember.

I'm just gonna leave this thread here in case someone else passes by with an idea. This is more of a nostalgia question anyway.

Here's another list of MOD players for DOS, maybe you can find it here: http://www.dcee.net/Files/Music/Player/

Some browsers will warn you that the website contains malicious files. You can probably ignore that.
