Fleshbrain - Timebandit
« on: June 05, 2022, 23:35:11 »

This song was the inspiration for Skaven's Revenge of the Cats, as noted below:

Quote
This piece has admittedly plenty of influence from a very old, somewhat unknown song made by Fleshbrain, called 'Timebandit'. Unknown, I assume, because it was not included among his songs in the Mods Anothology CD. His 'Timebandit' was one of the  truly creative classics; it is very old however, born near the very beginnings of the Amiga tracker music genre, so the sound and the instrumentation weren't among the best (the very concepts were being built around that time); however, the mockingly cool melody and well made, working structure make it a true delight. My regards to the old master.

Some months ago, I actually did manage to find an MP3 of this modfile on an obscure MP3 website after a few hours of Googling "fleshbrain timebandit". I've uploaded it to my personal Dropbox:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/icp58hlpjwq0mjb/fleshbrain_-_timebandit.mp3?dl=0
But I've searched high and low for the original modfile, and there's nothing to be found on Google or even Modarchive (unless it's really hidden in there).

This song's great (and so is Revenge of the Cats!) and I'd love to see the original modfile if it's still out there somewhere. Does anyone happen to have a copy of this still?
Thanks!  :)

It is not present on AMP or Modland either. Can't say I have it or even heard of it before. Probably lost in the mists of time. Sorry, can't help  :(

i know this is a necrobump but i have some actually valuable info so hopefully it'll cancel out:

i messaged skaven himself on soundcloud asking him if he still had the module file for the song, and he sent me an .stm file (he also told me he (or probably one of his friends) got it from a BBS)
this .stm file is, uh, a LOT more different than the .mp3 version of the song but it's still nonetheless pretty similar in composition which leads me to believe that fleshbrain originally composed the song as an .stm, then some years later he composed a remix in what i assume is a non-tracker program and then released that remix as an mp3 somewhere.

unfortunately, given the above, i don't think there's a module file for the remix. (well, you can try to find fleshbrain and reach out to him to know for yourself ;))

here's the .stm version (uploaded by yours truly): https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=208640

WOW - what a find. Thank you very much for this. I might actually upload this to YT later.
I can actually hear how this one would've probably inspired ROTC a bit more than the "remix" version (the guitar "riff" loop is very easy to hear in this), though that might be my imagination acting up ;D

i should probably note that the remix most likely came out after skaven's revenge of the cats, it was first uploaded on the nectarine demoscene radio in 2008 https://scenestream.net/demovibes/song/2695/  :)

That makes a lot of sense. So the theory is that the STM came first, then ROTC next, and then the remix, which could've been inspired by ROTC itself (maybe)?

IMO, the original sounds a bit more like it directly inspired ROTC - the remix sounds much more enhanced for the time and more influenced by Skaven's trackers than if it was the other way around. Plus, the guitar riff loop that Skaven was obviously inspired by for ROTC's guitar riff is immediately the first thing you hear in the original..... perhaps a coincidence? Perhaps not?

I've uploaded an oscilloscope view of the STM version to YT here, by the way: https://youtu.be/CaWop40uIbw?si=pkpBbss4_EdsZ87v
