Author: Peter Hajba Handle: Skaven Email: skaven_remedy.fi / skaven_isis.yok.utu.fi homepage: http://isis.yok.utu.fi/~skaven Song finished August the 30th, 1997 Consume it Dissect it Give it a twist Spit it back out This song has been made entirely with sounds from my old Casio CZ-101 phase distortion synthesizer. The samples were originally sampled in CD quality (16-bit 44.1kHz), but then resampled and converted into 8 bits to give the song at least a little more reasonable size. Main thanks for the nice sample quality goes to the Spirit Folio Notepad micro mixer I bought a while back; it gives excellent results with virtually no noise - provided you don't use the internal gain amplifier. :) This kind of music, however, is completely beyond the capabilities of the CZ-101, as it has only eight oscillators, giving only 4-note polyphony in double, and 8-note polyphony in single oscillator mode, not to mention it is a mono synth. This is where the tracker and a sound card or a sampler come in handy. Almost professional quality music can be produced this way - again, provided the tracker is good enough. :) Any guesses how the Rotox sound was made? Give up? Scroll down to see. :) Give up? The sound was made out of the 'Whistle' (!) found as a preset in CZ-101. It was switched from single-oscillator mode to double, added 1% phase detuning, then played in CG chord through the mixer with heavy overdrive. A crossfade was added with the sampling program to give it a good-sounding loop without needing to sample the entire phase 'wavelength' (which would have made the sample all too long). Ping-pong loop was not used, as when the waveform 'mirrors', it in most cases creates an audible click. So this is what a whistle can be made to sound like. :) The rest of the sounds have been programmed manually, either from scratch, or basing on the presets found in the CZ-101.
