artist In July of 1998, I had completed high school, and found myself with an abundance of free time that summer - I wasn’t going to start college until September. So, I had a brief flurry of songwriting that month. I completed and released three songs. Little did I know, these would be my last songs for Shattered Fixtures, and my last songs to be uploaded to the Hornet Archive.

As I mentioned in Outback Twilight, I was working on a series of songs that would represent each continent. I wanted to make a jungle-themed song to represent either Africa or South America (probably Africa). I got a number of jungle ambience samples from a CD-ROM my family owned (I don’t recall which one exactly, maybe Encarta).

I wanted the mood to be kind of dramatic. My mental image was that of exploring a dense jungle to find a clearing with towering waterfalls and a wide vista, so I tried to make music that would be a soundtrack for that sort of thing. The big string section in the first half was inspired by the soundtrack in the Fifth Element (the scene where Leeloo walks out of the building to see the cityscape for the first time). I’m pretty sure the bassline was inspired by another mod, but I’m not sure which one (possibly one from one of the Kosmic/FTZ music CDs I had).

This song I don’t think holds up all that well - I think my use of sound effects and other atmospheric samples set the mood reasonably well, but the tune itself just isn’t all that interesting to me. I think I did manage to create the imagery I was envisioning, but the song just wasn’t as good as what I was aiming for.

The music disk - Seven Kingdoms, as was my working title - never materialized. This and Outback Twilight were the only songs I actually completed for it. My next song, Swingshift, arguably could have been for that project as well, but it was a moot point. I couldn’t figure out how I wanted to represent South America, Asia, and Europe and thus my writer’s block killed the project. It’s just as well, because my imminent lack of a computer would have killed it anyway - I did not have a computer when I started college, and that would prevent my music composition until early 1999 (aside from Swingshift and Indefinite Radiant).
