"Beacon" Written by Novus Released for Sound Devotion 16-bit version released on Thursday, September 30th, 1999. 8-bit version released on Sunday, March 19th, 2000. For this 8-Bit Mix of "Beacon," I mixed all of the 16-bit samples down to 8-bit and then cut out the whispered vocals and the sound effects. I'm not nearly as happy with this version of "Beacon" as I am with the full-quality 16-bit version, but a lot of people were balking at downloading a 2-meg file, and I realized I had to be practical. I will say this, though... although very few people have downloaded the 16-bit version of "Beacon," none of them have regretted it. So, if you enjoyed this mix, you ain't heard nothing yet. Go to my web page and get the 16-bit version. You won't be sorry. ********** Dear friend, It's been a long time since I released my last song... too long. Hopefully, this will signify not only my continuing role as a benefactor of the scene, but also my return as an active participant in it. Sites such as my Rising Stars of the Scene project are helpful, but they are useless without the music. This is my first released song with lyrics, but it is not my first attempt at lyrics overall. I have a thick folder containing all of my musical ideas, including numerous examples of lyrics that I've written with ideas for music to go along with them that I just haven't done anything with yet. That should change in the future. Usually my lyrics have a direct personal meaning for me relating to my own experiences and emotions. That is not really the case here, however. No, I don't have more answers than anyone else to the questions I've posed here. I've just learned to accept that it's going to be a long time before I find those answers, if in fact I ever do. In the meantime, I'm going to live my life as best as I can. And if I ever get lost, I'll trust that God will let me know so that I can find my way again. So, why did I write these words? Perhaps I've been this person before and just haven't realized it. Or perhaps I'm trying to express the basic human desire to know, and the basic human frustration at failing to satisfy this desire. Or maybe there was no reason, and that it was just a bunch of words, rhythms, and rhymes that gathered in my mind across many sleepless nights, joined with the musical expressions that had gathered in my mind across many other sleepless nights, and eventually found their way onto paper and finally this file. I may never know. I can only hope that "Beacon" reaches and helps people in even a fraction of the way that my song "Revealing" has over time. One final note before I go. In this version of the song, the only words are the whispered ones from the Bible near the end. But I've been working with Rebecca Fahrendorf, a good friend who has agreed to lend her beautiful voice to completing this work. The results will probably be released as an MP3 sometime in the future, and I guarantee they will be worth waiting for.
