Artist's Comments
I did theater in high school. I was in six shows: three Christmas shows, West Side Story, The Who’s Tommy, and The Fantasticks. In the Fantasticks, I played Mortimer, a comic role who is an actor who specializes in death scenes (hence the comment “I’m a great death guy”). I put this song together as a tribute to the show, with three pieces from the first act: the overture, Try to Remember, and It Depends on What You Pay. I probably would have put Soon It’s Gonna Rain into it since I also loved that one, but I couldn’t remember the music well enough (I did this all from memory and didn’t have sheet music with me).
I probably intended to make another one for Act 2, but never got around to it. Not sure what songs I would have put into it...This Plum is Too Ripe, I Can See It, and Round and Round, probably.
This composition is kind of simple and bare-bones. It’s mostly percussion, piano, strings, bass and some electric guitars in the final part. Weirdly, I decided to use the bass guitar for the melody in Try to Remember and It Depends on What You Pay. It doesn’t work very well. Don’t use bass guitar for the melody, in general.
Also noteworthy: This song was my highest rated song on the Hornet Archive at three stars (out of five). Though I suspect this was only because they stopped rating stuff when I uploaded better songs later on. They only rated my other Quasar songs and none of my Shattered Fixtures works, some of which were at least worthy of 3.5 stars.
Theater was a big part of my social life in high school, and many of my friends were also involved in it. Mortimer in the Fantasticks was probably my favorite role, but my biggest was probably the Hawker in Tommy (I was playing a pimp and my song, “Eyesight to the Blind,” was about how amazing my prostitute was - my parents were so proud). I often wrote “can compose electronic music” under special skills when I auditioned for shows, but for some reason they never took me up on that.
