Well, here is the much
needed remix of my debut
song Outcast. It's an
extremely good one, too.
Albeit the original version
needed some retooling.
I've changed the instrumen-
tation a bit, and I've
added some effects, such as
fading and echoing.

So it's probably not uncommon for people to make new versions of songs they've previously composed. And probably because it was my first song, I had become fixated on making another version of Outcast to show how much I'd learned in the two or three months since I'd originally composed it.
Musically, yes, it's an improvement over Outcast, but not by much. I demonstrated a few new technical skills, such as "using sample volumes other than 64" and "how to properly cut channel audio." I even started using effects, namely volume fade in/out and (gasp) sample offset!
But other technical skills were still lacking. For example, I still fall back on the trick of what to do when a channel is too quiet even though I'm at max volume: just duplicate the channel to double the volume! And my musical skills were still rudimentary. The one thing that I was starting to figure out was how to use percussion properly, but I still had a long way to go on this one.
At some point I was envisioning a whole series of songs based around the "Outcast" melody but I only ever completed one more, over a year later. There's nothing particularly wrong with the tune, but there's no point in making a whole series around a single melody. So I'm glad I stopped at three. - arcturus
