S k y l i n e ------------- Written by Arcturus and BS4 A Shattered Fixtures Release Arc's comments: This is the first time I have done a cooperative tune with anybody. It's quite a new experience! And a lot of fun, too. Well, enough with this ill banter, let's get on with the greets: BS4, Ming Grey (or is it Myristica? :), madhatter, Dripsta, Redhaze, Kim, Subliminal, anybody whose samples I ripped, The Pro, and Pretzel. BS4's comments: Well... After weeks of work and fun, we finally completed that (weird) tune. Hope you like it! That's only the second tune I have written with someone and I hope to do it again very soon with anyone who is interested! The greets now: Arcturus, (Princess) Myristica, Dripsta, Redhaze, MixmasteR X, The Mad Hatter, Maelstrom, JYP and Tracker Noise. Thanks for the samples to anyone who deserves it. Skyline was my one and only collaboration. I had started a song that I had hit a dead end on, consisting just of a few patterns with a basic idea behind the song. I wasn’t getting very far and probably would not have continued working on it. But then, another member of Shattered Fixtures, BS4, had expressed some interest in doing a collaboration. I thought maybe he could have some fresh ideas to put some life into this song. So, I sent him the work-in-progress song that I had begun and it took off from there.
That was the right thing to do, as BS4 did indeed have some ideas on how to continue the song. He brought a fresh perspective and his tracking style made up for some of my own faults. What you hear in this is the finished product. The main framework of the song is my own work, but BS4 added a lot of embellishment and flair that brought it to life. It was his idea to add the piano, and most of the piano part is his work. I think he may have also added the saxophone. I added the bells, synth strings, and a lot of the percussion (the beat loop is from Mellow-D’s MC5 entry, flow moon).
I guess my style also helped out BS4 - the bridge section where the sweeping synth string chords come back in, which was my work, really impressed him. I recall him saying something along the lines of “wow, how do you come up with stuff like that?” in an email exchange.
We did have some disagreements. I wasn’t fond of the warbling sound he gave to the saxophone, but part of a collaboration is letting the people you’re working with do their thing.
BS4 was from Belgium, so I got to brag to people at school that I was collaborating with somebody from Belgium on making a song. I don’t think it impressed people as much as I thought it did at the time. I think I may have even played it for one of my classes at school. I named it Skyline because the song made me think of looking at a cityscape at night. It’s definitely among my better songs from the Shattered Fixtures era, probably not my best, but it’s up there. I’m glad I got to work with another person on making this song, as it gave me some perspective and ideas, and the song turned out better because of it.
