I decided to try and make a totally new style with this one. I had originally planned on mixing classical with acid and get a different sound, but the tune just wasn't depressing enough. =) So, instead of classical and acid, it's more of a New Age/Ambient mix with a few acid samples in it. I hope that you will enjoy it. I haven't done greetz for a while, so here is who I greet: Shattered Fixtures - We am the best! Pretzel - Make some new trax! The Pro - Make some trax! Everybody who is in this summer's programming class - I will dominate you all! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! -Arcturus

It’s kind of amazing to me how suddenly I slowed down in making songs. In 1996, I was typically banging out a song every week, and sometimes two or three. Once the calendar changed to 1997, my cadence went down to about a song every month - and later in the summer, even lower than that. Part of the reason for that was because I was spending more time putting the songs together - and so the quality went up as the quantity went down. Another reason was because I had other distractions like video games and theater (I was in a production of West Side Story around the time I was making this song). And a third reason was that I actually was making music, but some of the songs were lost. More on that when I write about Light of the World.
Anyway, by the time I finished Translucence I had been making mod music for over a year, and I had shaken many (but not all) of the bad habits I started with. This song was built around the three pluck sequence samples I heard used in a song by Subliminal whose name I do not recall. I decided strings would be a good accompaniment, and made a few odd decisions that resulted in a unique and kind of strange-sounding song. It’s sort of a mix of delicate enchanted forest music with hard, overdriven techno. I also got some inspiration for the percussion near the end from Xenoc’s song Banished.
I believe this was my third song using a groove tempo, the first two being Ghoulies and Ghosties and Outcast the Third (which uses it briefly). This song does not use it for the duration of the song - only for about half of it.
So on the whole this song is inconsistent - it has some good ideas but not always good implementation. I don’t think the overdriven beat loop works at all in this, and if I were to do this song again I would abandon the idea completely. The ending is nice, the beginning is okay, it’s just the middle part whenever the beat loop is playing that doesn’t sound so great. I wasn’t done mixing strings with beat loops - in fact, I did that in my very next song, the aforementioned Light of the World.
