Renoise would be the go-to if you want fully modern features, but baked into an oldschool tracker interface. OpenMPT is also a capable choice and gives you the freedom to still create old formats.

Despite not having worked with oldschool trackers for a while (still using Renoise though!), I just wanted to drop by to give my thanks to the Modarchive crew and #modarchive and #mod_shrine in IRC. I'm working as the audio team lead at a large game company these days thanks to the community. I highly doubt I would've had the motivation to improve my skillset as much as I did without the positive and encouraging social element the scene had. So many absolutely brilliant people to have taught me a thing or a dozen about sound design and composing in the past just by proxy of talking about tracker music with them.

I used chibi exclusively from 2007 to 2010 (at which point I just moved to Renoise). It's very, very capable and as long as you don't use reverb/chorus, it's almost fully IT-compatible with very minor inconsistencies in playback from what I can remember. And even if you use reverb/chorus, you can still load the track in other trackers and mod players just fine, only the reverb/chorus will be gone.

I believe there were releases after 1.2 as well with some nifty new features like 1-click echo effects and other UX improvements, but you'd probably have to ask around espernet's #mod_shrine for them.

I have a 28-track album of tracked stuff of mine in Spotify etc, but really from the later works of 2000-2010 - one thing that I wanted to do is to keep things legal copyright-wise, which meant having to know and clear the sample sources, so I ended up just omitting a lot of the early stuff due to that reason alone.

It is exactly what you said it is; a synth tambourine sample with a room reverb that is just pitched down by around two octaves. Not sure if it has a name, but you might find similar samples from old synth percussion sets.

Seems strange that some of his modules were credited, but many more weren't, presumably being compo entries?

As Saga said, one hour compos are fully informal and the authors rarely "officially" release the tracks due to the fact that very few people are able to pull off anything they're satisfied with within an hour. If you want to collect one hour compo tracks, it's fine, but it would be somewhat ill-mannered to release the tracks publicly in behalf of the authors, which is why you will rarely find them from the bigger mod music archives, especially properly credited.

Everything after that is on s3m.it - since all #mod_shrine / #modulez compos have been running on that site.

Oh, looks like compos are still happening. Maybe I return one day.

\ aka \Slash aka Surasshu aka Steven Velema. Game music composer and more recently scored Steven Universe with Aivi Tran.

He was always known as just \ or \slash in the tracker community.

The archive in question is one hour compos from espernet's #mod_shrine. It should be pretty exhaustive from the time period the archive is from, but unfortunately hundreds of them before 2006 (and apparently everything after 2014) weren't archived.

I still have my own tracks (240 compos entered mostly between 2003 and 2008), but I never kept the full votepacks around either.

Yo! Long time, no see... How're you doing'?

I'm good. Working as a lead audio designer in a large game company these days which leaves me with no extra time or motivation to work on my own projects. But I don't much mind, game development is interesting and challenging enough.
