[Solved] Epic Pinball Music
« on: April 23, 2006, 21:12:03 »

Well, I read this thread in the Rip Reports and now I have a question :)

Does anybody have the program with which i can open PSM files (epic pinball, jazz jackrabbit 1)? Modplug can't handle the main menu music and the music which comes at the end of the unregistered e.p. version (some bugs in patterns...), and i like those muzaks sooo much :) i was able to repair the major part of those patterns, but they're still incomplete...

so i ask? with which programm can i open psm files (i didn't find "Pro Tracker Studio"  :? )... or for instace: has anybody those files in s3m or a similar format?

Hey, I can't find Protracker Studio either, so it must be rare.  I know that the format's sort of like S3M, as that's what MPT plays it as.  Any S3M's you come upon are probably just simply opened in MPT and saved as S3M, messed up and all.

So we need to hunt for this PTStudio thing.

Dunno about Epic Pinball, probably have them somewhere. As for JJR1, I have them all in s3m format and they all play fine.

Try downloading them here: http://www.mirsoft.info/

I don't think there is such a thing as "Protracker Studio." Way back in the day when Joshua C. Jensen was writing mod players, he was always mentioning making a tracker program, but I don't think he ever got around to it.

Instead, PSM files are created by converting other mod formats to PSM using a special program he wrote. I once found a copy of this program in ftp.oulu.fi (I think), but I don't think it had support for converting back to the original. There was also an unfinished text file explaining the PSM file format, but when I looked at it, it didn't match the actual PSM file format used in the Epic games very much at all, so it wasn't very useful.

well, the readme says "they're made in Scream Tracker". But when i searched the net for this file extension, i found "used by pro tracker studio"... but at least, the files work now! Thanx :) they'll have a good place in my playlist now...

There was a program that came with the old Mega Ripper 5* called psm2scrm.exe that converts them to s3m. Worked for me, years ago...

(* And to keep things oldschool, here's the OLD Maz-sound site! BTW you'll need DosBox to run Ripper5 and associated programs under modern Windows.)

Ah, yes, DosBox. Good software. But, you could also try to use command.com from the system folder to run old software on Windows NT and later. Here's how to use it:

1. Press [Windows (The button with the windows flag)]+[R] to open the box "Run..." or open it from the start menu.

2. Type command.com and press enter or click OK.

3. The DOS command-line-interpreter is now running!

4. If you want to know how to use it. Type "help" without the double-quotes to get a list of commands. Then type the name of command and a "/?" after it. Example:
chdir /?

People who had old DOS computers from the 80's and the early 90's will recognise themselves.

You could also use cmd.exe which is more compatible with windows but less compatible with DOS (cmd.exe is actually 32-bit unlike command.com which is 16-bit).

If anyone is interested, you could also get GWBASIC from me. My first program was made using it. (GWBASIC is a common release of BASIC 1.2) However, that old game is corrupt - it was saved on a 5-inch floppy and that floppy was, unfortunately, exposed to sun.

If you need help with all this, you could ask me more about it all by sending an e-mail or PM.

ah, command.com shoudln't exist on nt based systems any more... and of course, it woudlnt fix the sound problems you have with these OSses. i also have a win98 computer, i use it for such things ^^

Ya, I tried running it under the command line shell in XP but it still didn't work. I think it doesn't like the new NT filesystem - Dosbox will emulate the old FAT method for these sorts of programs.

(Not trying to derail the topic here, but I have a 486/100 with DOS 6 and the old GUS+SB16 combo in the other room for all my oldschool needs. I also have a 486/100 laptop with a built in real SB Pro and Win95 that works pretty well too. I used to be pretty good at that stuff.)
