source code for MO3 support
« on: March 01, 2006, 20:55:57 »

Hi,

I released the source code to handle MO3 files here :
http://lclevy.free.fr/mo3

[Edit by Ninja Admin - Don't put periods . at the end of links!]

Yes, MO3 format supports lossless compression for samples, and maybe it is interesting for modarchive.com...

Thanks Lau, hopefully they'll implement the mo3 mod filter once they upgrade the archive, since now they've got what they need in order to
finalize the module import algorithms.

I find it an interesting development that a hacker would answer
the petition me and Rikimbo started so long ago :D
Regardless, I'm happy that Ian didn't try to interfere with you,
and instead chose to work with you.

So once again, I scream from the top of my lungs:

MO3 FOR THE MASSES! :D

Edited the link in the post, had a . after the link which is bad.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'm not yet able to promise anything as the engine that does the decoding of mods is binary and I don't have the source code myself - that will be looked into when I get further into the development of the new backend system. I can probably give a good indication that the new site will support MO3, if all goes well.

Update:

I've found someone who is going to take a look at updating our custom written (and old) instrument parser, so once mo3 support is added to that,  adding mo3 support to the rest of the (new) site will be very simple indeed. Good news eh? :)

Definetly. Too bad I needed the option 3 years ago.. and I doubt you'll let me replace all my .its with mo3s in the archive.

Anyways, I started thinking what if (yes, again a horrible idea coming)... the whole modarchive was converted into .mo3s. Think about the size of it after that!

Uhm, ok, I'll go eat my medicine.

Yes eat your medicine because that I am afraid is quite out of the question! If you really want to do this, feel free to download the torrents and do them yourself for personal use. ;)

You have to remember, that hardly any players or tracker programmes (especially Amiga users, yes they are still out there and of course older DOS trackers) support mo3, and in most of these cases they never will. Therefore it would render this site pretty exclusive to those players and trackers that do - it would discriminate, in a "Microsoft" way.

I often go by the saying "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" and the existing and established mod formats certainly are not broken, so what if they are uncompressed on the module level?? On the archive, they are zipped anyway - which means that if you mo3 compressed each file, and then zipped it you would end up with a file of relativly equal size and there is of course the potential that the filesize can grow larger if two compression methods are applied.

Food for thought? No. Medicine that tastes bad.

that's not right at all.... IT+ZIP is much larger than MO3+ZIP.... and it would be really nice if winamp supports MO3 in the future (i mean without the BASS extension)...

by the way... the standard winamp mod plugin seems to support Lowpass filters which are used in IT files, but it doesn't play them... what's wrong with my winamp? :hrrhrr:

Probably nothing, except, it is WinAmp. WinAmp is probably one of the worst players for modules. It is one of the best players for Media Player Expert Group Layer-3 (mp3) files, though.

Do not expect MO3 to become a MacroMedia in the soon future. Maybe in 2-3 years it may become, but that is if it grows large enough to create a large public demand.

We can always pray or send massive amounts of mails to the companies. But first, someone will need to develope a good tracker without too many bugs.

Btw, MP3 standard is part of MPEG suite (Moving Picture Expert Group).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3 I've never heard of Media Player Expert Group o_O Got your wires crossed or is there something I'm missing here...
