After only one song completed in the summer of 1997 and two in autumn, I had a brief flurry of songwriting in December of that year. This was one of three songs released in December, the other two being These Animals Hunt Back and Solitude.
This is a Christmas medley based on some of the songs I had done in high school theater. In the four years I attended high school, my school did a Christmas theater production every year. The first two were A Christmas Carol, and the third was a variation called Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol (told from Marley’s perspective). In my final year, instead of Dickens, we did a musical revue instead, called “A Winter Carol.” It was simply a selection of Christmas songs, some religious, some secular. I got to sing a solo, “O Come O Come Emmanuel.” This was one of the only songs that was in the Christmas production every year, and I was very familiar with it.
I decided to put that song into a medley, along with three other songs. The selections were, in order: White Christmas, O Come O Come Emmanuel, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Three of those were in the musical revue, Merry Gentlemen was not (I based the tune off of a variation on this heard in, of all things, Rise of the Triad). Since I had access to the sheet music, I made use of it in putting the song together, especially at the beginning.
The music in my track is kind of on the minimalistic side. The piano part was reasonably complex and interesting, but the rest of the song I don’t think was particularly noteworthy. However, it was an improvement over another medley I had made the year before, The Fantasticks Act 1. My skills were certainly improved in this one. I think “White Christmas” is probably the strongest of the four pieces of this one, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is probably the weakest.
For the title, the year before I had intended to make a music disk released around Christmas called “An Arcturus Christmas.” It never happened, but I still liked the name so I applied it to an actual Christmas song instead.
The comments are a reference to Blackadder’s Christmas Carol.
