artist Completed in March 1999.

While my previous song, Horizons Below, had taken me over a month to complete, this one took me less than a week. I began work on it immediately after finishing Horizons Below. I’m not sure why I was so motivated to complete this song. It was possibly my best song from 1999, either this or Pray For Rain, and certainly among my best works overall.

This song had several sources of inspiration. One was one of my own songs, the latter half of my MC6 entry Unspoken Thoughts. It was also inspired by a song called sisiphus' dream by Big Bear (you’ll notice the similar chord progression). Finally, the first three piano notes were inspired by the soundtrack to the Fifth Element, specifically the “Leeloo Breaks Out” music (that same piece also inspired some of the string notes in another tune of mine, Jungle Trek).

What I like about this song is its simplicity. Not just with the tune itself, but with the tracking - I let volume envelopes do most of the work on the chords and didn’t bother with the fade in/fade out effects. The melody is mostly just a piano part, with very few chords. The piano and lead synth pad complement each other, and then combine towards the end.

At the time, I considered this my best work. I was amazed that I had finished it in only six days of work, and I couldn’t stop listening to it. In retrospect, I would say that this song is definitely well-crafted but not terribly exciting. I suppose this song represented an introspective phase of music that would continue for the next several songs. Still, I would say this song is still among my best, though probably not THE best.

Wow, less than a week after I released Horizons Below, I pump out another
song.  Cool.  The opening string chords are a bit generic, I know, but I
like 'em anyway, dang it!  And I changed to some different chord progs
after that.  In the end it almost started to sound like my song "Unspoken
Thoughts."  Hrm.  I must have a knack for these flowing chord progressions
:)
