Mysterious Unknown ~ The Obscured World "Darkness emerges, from beneath our feet. Whole cities are being swallowed by a dark fog that has been rising from the ground, slowly ascending every second and engulfing everything in it's wake. I am inclined to write about this strange phenomenon that is currently happening, and I can only pray that those underneath, are safe and unharmed by the darkness. Fergalt, the capital of our country, was submerged in the fog, hours ago. Those of us in the air, riding in various airships, consisting of military personnel, are most likely the remaining ones left. We only had a window of time to fly above before the fog could have reached us. I only wish I could have done more. None of our personnel on ground have responded, and we can only assume the worst has happened. Our transport airship containing military grade equipment, Juniper ZL-11 is above ground, safe above ground with a few other airships. It's a living nightmare on board, panic spreading amongst the crew. Our home is gone, and we're probably soon to follow. I'm already homesick, and I don't know if I can take more of this. To my family, if you can read this, I'm sorry I couldn't get to you. This entry was written by Private Ewers." Scale: D# Major. Duration: 2 minutes and 7 seconds. BPM: 90.024 according to VirtualDJ. I challenged myself to make a song off a short passage I wrote that you probably read above. Hell, it can be a story if you want, I don't care. Ironically, the entire Song Message is an essay compared to what I wrote... This is my attempt at a nice 2 - 3 minute title screen song. I wanted to aim for a Touhou style, and that meant learning to arrange good percussion which could possibly be challenging for someone to actually play on the drums. I was, however not too keen on counter melodies, so I think it doesn't work as well as a Touhou song because of the lack of melodies playing alongside the main one. A lot of the song was inspired from Yellow Robe and Into the Deep Blue Sky, from the Master Of Monsters game on Sega Genesis, and an eroge. Yeah... There's a song with a harpsichord playing, and the tone can be described as very haunting. Tanabe Rumia is best girl though, haha. Another one would be GhidaPoP from Ghidorah, I think I might have overdone it by basing too much of Pattern 1 - 3 and Pattern 12 - 17 around GhidaPoP, but, oh well. I wanted to try a dark tone since everyone's probably gone or dead due to some fog that I thought of. It could even be the fog from Yahtzee's 1213 game that killed everyone on Earth, who knows? While giving it a dark tone, there's still hope. Airships above still have life. So I decided to give it some hope while it was in a dark tone, and the percussion gives energy, the energy of man to survive even though chances may be grim. Some variations shift from being hopeful to hopeless, and some, quite radically different and unexpected than others, because the unknown holds many possible outcomes. It's indeed a mystery if the human race will survive in my story. A writer can just make a cop out, happen halfway through the story. False alarm. Maybe it's a twist, the fog is actually good for health. I wouldn't know. Therefore, the name Mysterious Unknown came into mind. The subtext "The Obscured World" was just a stupid thing I thought of that might fit better in Imperishable Night because the moon was hidden. I still think the song transitions could use a little work. Here's my thoughts on the patterns. Pattern 0, the intro, is self explanatory. Pattern 1 - 3 is where the song gets going. At Pattern 4 to 7, I actually wanted to end the song early, but I picked up on my mistake of making original songs too short thanks to MikeGamePro who told me Severance had that unfinished quality to it. They're like Pattern 1 - 3 but with a slightly different melody, different key, and an ending. Pattern 8, 9, and 11 is my way of extending the song with a different melody style I did in Smile With Me. Two harpsichords of one higher and lower octave play together to give it texture. I was too lazy to do a chords thing, so yeah. Pattern 10 is Pattern 11's alternate ending that I left unused. It would later serve as good reference for Pattern 12 - 16, which also gets unused, lol. Pattern 12 - 16 is where I get very avant-garde with the music and try to give it a really different style, and the percussion and fiddle become the main focus around there. At first the percussion gives it a cool beat, then the fiddle comes around, and the style gets really weird from there. I have this feeling it's repetitive, but I give up, I can't make it any better. That's the reason why I've left Pattern 12 - 16 out. Pattern 17 is the transition to Pattern 4, and I still feel unsatisfied, like I could have made it better, since I took off 32 rows exclusively on that pattern, and it still sounds a bit off. But if it works, it works. If you want to hear the song how I originally envisioned it, just arrange the patterns like this. It'll sound slightly avant-garde, but the style will definitely be different for sure. 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 14, 15, 16, 17, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7. Here's a fun fact. My favourite instrument on the General MIDI set is the Harpsichord because it gives off quite a regal feeling, and you can give a happy or sad tone, I love the sound of it. I like it accompanied with another instrument. You may have heard an example of how I combined Steel Drums with that instrument in Ascent Town to make that upbeat song. I used Timidity patches, as well as Gravis Ultrasound patches to create this. Amplified some of the percussion samples by 200%. Nothing more. I hope this title screen piece is good enough. It's no masterpiece, but I tried. - Jason Ee, 20th - 24th January, 2020.
