MilkyTracker Feature Requests / Re: 4 questions
« on: May 27, 2008, 12:42:58 »
1. Open the sample editor context menu (right-click, Cmd-click, tap'n'hold or whatever) and select Generators > Sine.
You can still get it imperfect with the wrong sample length and number of periods though, so here are the settings for a pretty nice sine: Sample length: 128 bytes (80 in hexadecimal) and number of periods: 1.0. Doubling sample length increases accuracy but lowers the relative note of the sample so if you go overboard, you will only be able to play REALLY low frequencies with your sine wave.

2. Yes, by using the 3xx or Mx command. Remember, when you use these portamento commands with notes, they don't trig the sample, so first play a note WITHOUT the command and use it for the following notes.

3. What do you mean? You can load or generate whatever length sample (from the context menu > New).

4. If you're still talking about samples, then no. There isn't a time stretch function in the tracker (at least not at the moment).

For an indie game, I'd pick credit over payment any time.

MilkyTracker Support / Re: editing question

In a way it's considered common knowledge since MilkyTracker basically copies the features of Fasttracker II, a DOS program released in the mid-90s. But we don't want to alienate newbie users either, by no means. A user manual is planned, we are very much aware that the current manual doesn't cover that area. But you could do a lot worse than checking out the old Fasttracker II manual, also available on our documentation page. It should explain the basic usage and features available in Milky as well.

Multi-sample instruments can be used to create a more authentic sound of a real-life instruments, a piano for example. Sampling multiple notes from a piano and mapping them on the instrument editor keyboard correctly creates a more natural sounding instrument than simply playing just one piano sample at different pitches. Another use is drum kits where you often use each sample at one particular pitch throughout the whole song. Grouping the whole kit under a single instrument may or may not seem logical to you, it's a personal preference if anything. Using multi-sample instruments also makes it possible to use other note scales than the typical western one.

MilkyTracker Tracks & Songs / Re: How to create chords?

Record directly to sample slot (by clicking the "file" button in the recorder panel and selecting a slot). Then cut away bits you don't want (or crop the stuff you do want!). I don't think it'll ever get more exciting than that.

...I own all rights to the song. This also means that you worn't be credited at all.

;D

is there a basic instruction manual/list of basic functions and commands anywhere?

Indeed there is. One came with your tracker download, it's called MilkyTracker.html. Also available on our website, in the Documentation section. You can even print out a quick reference chart of keyboard shortcuts and effect commands. Didn't think this stuff was that hard to find. Well, I guess YouTube is easier.. ;)

PC Players / XMPlay Support site
« on: May 22, 2008, 18:27:24 »
XMPlay has a fairly comprehensive support website run by Rah'Dick which lists pretty much every skin, visualization and plugin that works with XMPlay. There's also articles and tutorials and what have you. Recommended for a full XMPlay experience.

Ah, the URL: http://support.xmplay.com/

The Lobby / Re: XM vs IT

Yeah, old question, sure, but how's it nowadays?

So is it about .XM and .IT or something ModPlug introduced and decided to call the same? Doesn't that make .XMs have filters as well and what, maybe VST? I don't know, I seriously have no idea about Windows trackers.

Doesn't IT play them? Are they not real .ITs?

Try the sample editor context menu > Advanced for generators and filters.

True, .mp3s won't work straight away. You have to decode them first. On Windows I would recommend either setting your media player to output to .wav instead of the soundcard or using LamedropXPd. Dunno what's the simplest solution on OS X. Same goes for the octave selection: maybe pailes, as a Mac-man, can help you. If all else fails, you can flip over the middle section of the main panel to access mouse controlled octave selection.
