First of all, what is your setup? OS, any exotic audio hardware? Which driver are you using (in Config > I/O)?

Second, do you have a benchmark song (a module whose correct playback you're familiar with), that would illustrate the problem better?

It seems to me like you are describing the speedier playback as the problem state but I find it more likely that's actually when you're hearing correct output. And naturally that would make a song composed in slow motion sound wrong. The reason I say this is because a stubborn sound device or its drivers could impose a wrong mixing rate on live playback but when rendering directly to disk, they shouldn't be able to have any effect.

By default the instrument keys are all mapped to use sample slot #0. That's why the piano keyboard in the instrument editor has all those zeroes plastered over it. To make a key use another sample slot, select the slot in the sample list and click on the key.

'S pretty good. Technically simple but musically sound and as such would pass as an aesthetic choice from a more seasoned tracker musician. In other words, there's nothing wrong with the song, which in itself is pretty huge for a firstie. Keep at it.

MilkyTracker Support / Re: import midi files?

It can't. It could, if there was a developer interested in adding that. Pailes isn't actively developing the tracker anymore and something tells me that even if he was, this wouldn't be a high priority.

But not to worry, I hear Open ModPlug Tracker does import MIDI files. You could use it to export the song to .XM and then open that in MilkyTracker. Another option could be MID2XM but it's getting a little old already and there may be compatibility issues with the more recent Windows versions.

MilkyTracker Support / Re: Sine wave quality
« on: November 04, 2012, 01:02:24 »
The frequency table used shouldn't matter but the interpolation method does, increasingly so the lower quality your samples are. But that can't be saved into the module so you only have control over it if you're playing the module yourself. So, I think what you might want to do is to try to make your sine wave high quality:

  • Open the sample editor.
  • Switch the sample to 16-bit to get the vertical resolution.
  • Create a sample of a decent 2^n size, say 256 or even 512. (Higher quality means lower pitch, so you might need to correct that in the instrument editor by adjusting the relative note up a couple of octaves.)
  • Generate 1 period of sine at 100% volume.
  • Forward loop the whole sample.

Are we getting there?

How about this bit?
You should be able to reverse this behavior in System Preferences so that to control screen brightness, sound volume etc, you need to press the Fn key and without it the function keys are just function keys. At least you can do that in previous versions of OS X.

Oh and about the NoteOff in Ubuntu, how about 1 or the key below Esc?

How about if you simultaneously press the Fn key with those combinations? Standard function keys take a back seat to Macs' system keys by default. You should be able to reverse this behavior in System Preferences so that to control screen brightness, sound volume etc, you need to press the Fn key and without it the function keys are just function keys. At least you can do that in previous versions of OS X.

Then there's FunctionFlip which lets you set this mode per-key which in theory is quite handy. (I use F1-F9 as regular function keys but the volume controlling F10-F12 flipped.) In practice the program isn't flawless and sometimes the keystrokes go through the opposite way or [any key] gets translated to an F key press, etc. Worth slightly more than the trouble I'd say.

Help me find that... / Re: looking for that one tasty texture
« on: June 25, 2012, 08:58:52 »
Two of the NES's 20a3 sound chip's sound channels are dedicated to producing pulse waves of the following variations:

‾|_______ The "12.5%",

‾‾|______ the "25%",

‾‾‾‾|____ the "50%", or square, and

‾‾‾‾‾‾|__ the "75%".

I think the "texture" you're after comes from playing notes on both pulse wave channels, one for the actual melody and the other harmonizing it. Different note and wave combinations produce different sounding results. Experimentation and variation are key, methinks.
